Tormaresca is an Italian estate located in Puglia, the heel of Italy’s boot. Established in 1998 by the Antinori family, this property showcases wines made from indigenous grape varieties. The resultant products taste not merely good, but special–different and wildly intriguing. Here are my notes for five recently tasted offerings.
Clean, fresh and buoyant nose–I’d never guess this was a hot climate Chardonnay. A mellow nose of apple, pear, touch of melon and a citric uplift. Inviting, soft, easygoing and well balanced in the mouth. It’s a bit flaccid and would serve best as a casual sipper. A great choice for a restaurant pour. Drink now. 86/100 points
Deep yellow hue. Gracefully perfumed with pear elements that seem positively windswept. Background notes of creamy honey surround the sinuses. (The Fiano grape was once called Apianum, because it so attracted bees!) This drinks dry and smoothly with a medium body and alert acids on the finish. Flavors include crisp apple and a crackling, bitter almond element. Begs for calamari, pork or even a full-blown Cacciucco. Drink now-2015. 88/100 points
A round, deep well of earthy plum and cherry with fresh herbs adding lightness and lift. Attractive! Flavors are clean and a bit lighter than the nose promises. Medium-bodied with blackberry suggestions and tannins that promise short-term improvement. Drink now-2017 Excellent value. 87/100 points
Fascinating nose of velvet enrobed fruit. Warm oak surrounds a distinctive nose of raspberry, chocolate-covered fig and mountain herbs. A lithe mouth texture that glides with Mulberry and cherry components with a lingering freshness overall. A blend of 65% Aglianico, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Syrah, this will develop further with 2 years in the bottle. 89/100 points
Direct, positive fruit compote on the nose, with focused wild berry, forest floor underpinning and a sweet lavender sensation. True Zinfandel lovers would adore this! Bursting with berry flavors, plenty of spice and a touch of mint. Well-integrated tannins and emerging complexities as it airs. A claret-like wine with a loving personality. Drink now-2014. 91/100 points
